Language : A great problem

Somnath Mandal

So far it was only about  language and a push back by people in  Maharashtra,  Tamilnadu, Karnataka

… against “imposition of Hindi” by the Centre, especially through New Education Policy..

This is much worse, with a vocal Kannadiga group protesting against Tamannah Bhatia being “imported” as brand Ambassador for Karnataka Soaps, instead of Kannada actresses like Deepika Padukone.

Left unaddressed, this could spiral into a

 major Centre-State conflict.

The former should realise that India is a diverse  “Union” of States, while people of outside the Hindi belt states should try not to precipitate matters.

Tolerance, nay Undertanding, is a prerequisite for the well bring of a diverse country like ours.

In Bangalore, Jaya starts with her pidgin Kannada (she schooled in Mangalore for a couple of years)  and we continue the conversation in English, Hindi, Malayalam,Tamil.. as needed.

When I was posted as FACT’s Regional Manager in Trichy, I tried to even make speeches in Tamil, a language I barely knew. But the local audience appreciated the effort.

That’s what’s important, show your appreciation for local language and culture.

Simple rule.

Never ever assert that you won’t speak the local language!
